CYTAT DNIA
Joseph E. Stiglitz

We, the undersigned citizens who have supported Poland’s accession in the European Union, wish to express our view concerning the shape of the European Constitution. We have decided to speak up, because our opinions are not being represented by the Polish Parliament and mainstream media.
Media and politicians place us before the alternative: „Nice or death” - with only occasional suggestions that some form of compromise may be possible. The rhetoric of national success, used by all political parties, from the far right LPR to the left wing SLD, has overshadowed the basic fact: the EU Constitution is yet another step on the road to European integration. Developments which we perceive as positive - the construction of common central institutions, the democratization of elections, the unification of states into one organism, and the resulting emergence of a common European public sphere - these developments are portrayed to us as an obvious threat. According to all official statements, maintaining the agreements reached in Nice is absolutely necessary to our interest, and our national identity demands that we support a Preamble emphasizing the role of Christian values in the European tradition.
We want a different Europe.
We want a Europe which upholds common values - such as liberty, equality and solidarity - but feels no need to name their sources, because it does not wish to alienate or exclude anyone. We want a Europe which is politically strong, efficiently managed, and decisive in its strife for unity - because this is the only way we can counter one-sided economic globalization. We do not want our role in United Europe to be that of an obstacle to integration, a symbol of conservatism and particularism. We are deeply concerned that presenting our interest as opposite to that of Europe does not serve our good. We fear that, in consequence, Europe may be split in two: a united group of dynamically developing states, and a marginal group resisting integration - we fear that we may find ourselves in this margin.
And we wish our view to be taken into account, along with all the others.
